What is an STSM?

4th grant period (May 2016-April 2017)

The aim is to promote individual mobility within the COST Action’s scientific objectives.

A STSM allows a scientist to spend a short period in another institution of another country to foster collaboration and strengthen networks, and at the same time allow applicants to learn new techniques or gain access to specific instruments and/or methods not available in their own institutions.

STSMs are especially for Early Stage Researchers (ESR):

  • PhD students and
  • post-docs max. 8 years after finishing PhD

Geographical balance must be taken into account.

Please coordinate the applications from your country: if you send several applications at a time, please give the STSM committee the order in which you wish the applications to be assessed.

Period

  • A minimum duration of 5 working days
  • A maximum duration of 3 months (for ESRs up to 6 months)

Financial support

  • A maximum of 2 500 € for a mission of ≤ 3 months or max 3 500 € for a longer mission.
  • Please note that the grant is reimbursed. COST does not pay any advancements. The reimbursement of STSMs is not intended to cover all expenses. Please apply a precise sum.
  • The reimbursement rate per day is 160 € maximum (more economical forms of accommodation are encouraged than a hotel of this price).

How to apply?

The application should comply with COST STSM regulations and eligibility criteria and should follow the budgetary guidelines given in point 7 of COST Vademecum at www.cost.eu/participate (on the menue available on the right).

Registration of participant

Step 1: Before submitting an application, the applicant must obtain the written agreement of the host institution.

Step 2: The carefully filled STSM Short Questionnaire should be sent to the STSM coordinator Kristiina Aalto-Korte  who will perform a pre-approval of your registration considering the Actions objectives and define an acceptable funding level.

Step 3: Only in case of pre-approval, please submit your STSM application online at www.cost.eu/stsm (link opens in new window and an e-COST profile is required and can be created if needed). The online application tool will issue a formal STSM application.

Assessment and final approval

Step 4: Online applications will be evaluated by the STSM Committee. The applicant will be notified about the decision of the STSM committee as soon as possible.

Step 5: The Grant Holder will send a final confirmation (Grant letter) via e-COST to the applicant. The applicant has to return this Grant letter with his/her signature.

Further COST networking tools can be found here.
